The AM02 Retro Mini is powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840HS, a popular choice among handheld manufacturers due to its impressive performance per watt. This APU features 8 cores and 16 threads based on the Zen 4 core architecture, with clocks of up to 5.1 GHz. It also houses the Radeon 780M “RDNA 3” iGPU, which packs 12 compute units running at 2700 MHz. This combination of power and efficiency makes the AM02 a formidable device for both gaming and everyday computing tasks.
In November 2023, AYANEO gave a sneak peek into its upcoming lineup by showcasing the designs of its new SKUs. Specifics, such as the onboard components, were kept under wraps. However, with the recent listing of the AM02 Retro Mini, we can glean some insights into how AYANEO might position its complete lineup, which is based on AMD’s renowned Phoenix APUs.
The AM02 Retro Mini is equipped with AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840HS, a favorite among handheld device manufacturers due to its excellent performance-to-power ratio. As stated earlier, this APU boasts 8 cores and 16 threads, based on the Zen 4 core architecture, and includes 8 MB of L2 and 16 MB of L3 cache. It can clock up to 5.1 GHz and has a configurable TDP between 35 and 54W. The device also features the Radeon 780M “RDNA 3” iGPU, which includes 12 compute units running at 2700 MHz. Judging by the specifications and the device’s form factor, the AM02 Retro Mini promises to deliver impressive performance.
The design of the AM02 Retro Mini is a nod to the iconic Nintendo NES, mirroring its color scheme and structure. To enhance its functionality and give it a modern touch, AYANEO has incorporated a dedicated 4-inch touchscreen. While this small screen may not be suitable for gaming, it’s a handy feature for displaying information like the date, time, and even the device’s temperature.
One distinctive feature of the AM02 Retro Mini is its front opening cover, which neatly conceals the I/O ports, adding to its sleek look. While AYANEO hasn’t specified the types of ports the device supports, the shared images suggest the presence of USB Type-C and Type-A ports, as well as an HDMI connection.
AYANEO has yet to announce the pricing for the AM02 Retro Mini. However, the company recently revealed that the device will be launched on January 18th, with those participating in the crowdfunding campaign receiving an “early bird” discount.
